Adam Brown’s best Kent and Sussex restaurants

The man behind goodfood_tw shares five of his favourite local eateries to try

Unsurprisingly, the only thing we love more than writing about food at Key & Quill HQ is – of course – eating it. From gastropubs and award-winning cafés, to more exotic cuisine from all over the world, we’re spoiled for choice where we live when it comes to eating out.

Few people know this better than Adam Brown. As the mastermind behind goodfood_tw, there’s practically nowhere he hasn’t pulled up a chair and tucked in. So, when Hannah and I tasked him with choosing his five favourite eateries in west Kent and East Sussex, he knew he had his work cut out for him.

Now, ask anyone I know to describe me in three words, and ‘indecisive’ will invariably be one of them. I’m the worst when it comes to making decisions – an inevitable by-product of crippling anxiety coupled with habitual OCD, I suppose. So, you can imagine how much of a nightmare I can be when my friends ask exasperatedly, ‘So, Fred, what’s it gonna be – Chinese or Indian?’.

Luckily, with people like Adam around, ‘where and what to eat’ is one less thing to worry about, as he came through in style, selecting a quintet of restaurants that aren’t to be missed. Spanning classic British fare, mouth-watering Thai dishes and ‘the best burgers in Tunbridge Wells’, he ticked all the boxes that any discerning gourmet deserves from our beloved local food scene…

The Mark Cross Inn
Mark Cross, East Sussex

Part of the fantastic Whiting & Hammond group, The Mark Cross Inn boasts spacious dining rooms and a menu that’s full of hearty pub classics. The garden is the real star of the show, though, offering picturesque views across the scenic Sussex countryside.

Kai’s Kitchen
Tunbridge Wells, Kent

After reopening earlier this year, Kai’s Kitchen has once again positioned itself as the go-to eatery for authentic Thai cuisine in west Kent. The delicious food, friendly service and buzzy atmosphere make this one of my favourite restaurants to visit.

Saint John’s Yard
Tunbridge Wells, Kent

Popular with pretty much everyone I know, Saint John’s Yard has built a reputation for good food and a great atmosphere. The menu is full of mouth-watering meals, including the best burgers in Tunbridge Wells.

The Cinnamon Square
Hildenborough, Kent

We’re spoiled for choice when it comes to quality Indian restaurants in Kent, but my favourite has to be The Cinnamon Square. The service is always impeccable, while the menu features a variety of classic dishes and chef specials, all with a great depth of flavour and beautiful presentation.

The Black Dog
Tunbridge Wells, Kent

Located on Camden Road, Australian café The Black Dog serves a great variety of breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes. The delectable food is complemented by speciality Monmouth coffee, and the café itself has a lovely ambiance.
